Against the Current, Carried with the Tide,
Where Do We Belong?
Installation, exhibition
The Small Bodies began as triangles. They were folded, overlapped, and formed into vessels with necks. Eventually, there were 145 of them.
Initially, I thought I would display them on beautiful poplar shelves. But that felt too impersonal, too unavailable. Instead, I started collecting weathered planks as my shelves. A friend found some old rusty scaffolding for me. We found rocks to create ballast for the lighter shelves. A new world developed. The Small Bodies had an environment in which to live. Their meaning changed with their environment.
My favorite place is the liminal space between shore and ocean.
In this exhibition, The Small Bodies and their environment were presented with images of sand that mirrored them; writing that spoke of my fascination with sand and ocean; and poems were printed on transparencies and projected on the wall. Visitors were asked to handle and move the Small Bodies.
Sometimes, people still visit the studio, and if they are in need of some release, the little vessels are available for secrets to be whispered.
